"Victoria's Magical Little Emblem - Leadbeaters Possums"
The Leadbeater's Possum is Victoria's State Faunal
emblem. It is an endangered species which is only
found in Victoria. The Leadbeater's population, before
the fires of 2009, numbered between 2,000 and 2,500 individuals.
Now, after the fires, there are estimated to be less than 1,000.
The "Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum organisation was
established in 2004. It's aim is to give a voice this beautiful
and shy animal. There are many issues impacting the
Leadbeater's Possum survival. Some of these include timber
harvesting, bushfire and methods used for bushfire prevention.

'Hildie's Return'

This is Hildie, an Eastern Grey Kangaroo. She was an orphan
found in Hildebrand Road 14 years ago. She was raised by
Stella and Alan and released at their property, Wildhaven,
St Andrews,Victoria.
This is Hildie returning to Wildhaven seven days after the fires of
February 7th 2009.
The charcoal on the trees is actual charcoal taken from the fires of
St Andrews. Hildie was one of two kangaroos that survived
the fires in St Andrews in which thousands of others perished. Stella Reid contributed some reference material for this painting. |
